What Leaders Can Learn From England’s World Cup Mindset

Leadership

The World Cup is here; an international showcase of teamwork, passion, and hard work. I can’t help but find leadership inspiration in every single match. Today’s takeaway is drawn from England’s manager, Thomas Tuchel. When he took on the head role last year, he made a speech to the team sharing his vision for them in no uncertain terms. If you haven’t seen the viral video, it’s worth a view. He clearly and passionately expresses his goal for the team to win the Cup.

I love so many things about this: the clarity of the mission, the passion and drive underpinning it, the inspiration and motivation with which he’s inviting his team into his vision.

Most of us may not have goals and teams with such globally recognized impact; but that’s not the point. The point is that we can use this simple, powerful model to guide and inspire  our own teams…

→ Be absolutely clear about the mission

→ Paint a picture of what success will look like when you’ll achieve it

→ Express your belief and passion for it; this will help folks believe (and buy in)

Too often, I see leaders mired in the day-to-day and losing sight of the importance of consistent, passionate communication about where the organization is going and why. Let this be a reminder that your team needs you to be what Tuchel is to the England football team: audacious, clear, and passionate.

Happy World Cup Watching!
